Connecting to the Bernina 830

We recently received a Bernina 830 in for testing, and we wanted to start out with sending design to the machine from our software connection right away. You can connect to the machine with one of three software's:

-Bernina embroidery software [must be version 5.0w, you can download the service pack 2 from Berninas FAQ site]

-ArtDesign embroidery software, this disc should be included with the 830 machine [must be updated with the ArtDesign Service Pack 1 found HERE]

-OESD Explorations 1.5E [under testing, will have a link with more info, when it becomes available]

Our initial testing was on a Windows XP SP2 system, and a Windows Vista. Both computers only had the BES 5.0W installed.

The Vista computer sent over to the 830 machine beautifully, without problems.

The XP computer was a bit of a problem, We received the following error message when sending to the machine the first time:

We then installed the ArtDesign software that came with the machine and updated it with its Service Pack 1. We opened the ArtDesign software and tried to send it to the machine and it worked!

We scratched our heads a bit on this as to why the Bernina software 5.0W wasn't sending to the machine but the ArtDesign would, we then tried the BES 5.0W one more time, and it worked! Now from a Technical point of view, if it has an error it can be fixed, but the most problematic of all errors are going to be inconsistencies.

We went back to the ArtDesign cd to see what additional items, if any it installs that may help us solve this issue, and we find out that the program that communicates with the Bernina 830 requires the Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 or higher, which is included in the ArtDesign cd.

Our Vista testing machine already had this pre-installed, but our XP SP2 machine only had Microsoft .NET 1.1, so after the ArtDesign cd installed it, both applications were able to send and receive from the machine just fine.

Wrap up:
So a minor hitch that can be remedied quickly, below i have written down a few specifications to make sure everything is uptodate and in working order.
requirements:

Windows XPSP2, XPSP3, Vista 32bit
Microsoft .NET 2.0 or higher [located on the ArtDesign installation cd, or from Microsoft.com]
Bernina embrodiery software 5.0W
ArtDesign software 1.0G
Explorations 1.5E [currently testing]

USB, EXP and YOU

In the support department we get a lot of questions that may be on the mind of many users, one of our major questions is "what is the difference between an EXP file and an EXP+ file, and how do i get them".

An EXP file stands for Expanded file. This format of file is one of the oldest formats available and carries raw stitch data, no additional data like color information is available in the EXP format, so when a design is transferred to your machine it may look like a silhouette of the design on the machines screen.

An EXP+ design is still an Expanded file, but the "PLUS" part gets its name from the additional files included with the EXP file. These files are an INF file [displays specific colors used for the design] and a Bitmap file [to display the image of the design on the machine].

Well how do you get the EXP+ file? you might ask. The only way to generate an EXP+ design file is by using the Bernina embroidery Software or the OESD Explorations embroidery software, these two software packages contain a program called ADX, which creates then transfers the design files directly to embroidery machines, to embroidery design cards, or to usb sticks.

"I have a Bernina 340 embroidery machine, will i be able to use regular EXP designs if i don't have the Bernina or OESD software?" Yes, as mentioned before, the EXP files ARE the designs themselves, so although it may not look as fancy on your machines screen without all of its color information, it will still be able to stitch out the design properly. There are however a few steps to make sure your machine is able to locate the designs properly on your usb stick.

As indicated in your 340 machine manual the design files [exp] must be within a certain folder on your usb stick for the machine to be able to find them. This folder can be created through windows explorer and must be titled "EMBF5".

You may transfer more than one EXP design at a time to the USB stick whether through a drag and drop method in windows or through your embroidery software. Your machine will be able to read them properly once in the proper folder.

It is STRONGLY suggested that you do not use a USB stick that you also currently use for transferring other files such as pictures, documents, programs, or multiple other files not associated with your machine. This will generally confuse the machine and cause an error in your machine preventing your from viewing your designs properly, to even causing error messages of a damaged or empty USB stick.

If you have any questions, or additional tips please feel free to drop it into the comment section.
